Fumigation and Sterilization

The Red Cross Sanitation Commission spent months cleaning public building of the lice infestations that were spreading typhus. After emptying the buildings, all clothing and bedding was fumigated. (MSS 97 Item 56, Special Collections, University of Delaware Library, Newark, Delaware. , Special Collections, University of Delaware Library, Newark, Delaware.)

Just ten days after arriving in Greece, Stanley Osborn had arrived in Montenegro, and begun what would be his primary mission: fumigation. All public gathering places were slated for fumigation, including government buildings, churches, mosques, and schools.  Highest priority was given to hospitals.  When Osborn arrived in Montenegro, he and his teammate, began disinfecting the infectious disease hospital in Jacovitza, Montenegro.  To disinfect the hospital, they began by removing all bedding and mattresses. They fumigate using a chemical spray, the building was whitewashed, all straw is removed from mattresses, burned, and replaced with fumigated straw.  All bedding and clothing was fumigated and sterilized before being replaced.
