Invasion

???????????????????????????????

The Bulgarian invasion in October 1915 changed relief work for the Lady Paget Hospital. (MSS 97 Item 56, Special Collections, University of Delaware Library, Newark, Delaware. , Special Collections, University of Delaware Library, Newark, Delaware.)

In the months leading up to the Bulgarian invasion of Serbia, rumors abound as to what side Bulgaria would take, and what the reaction of the Allied powers would be if Bulgaria fought against them. Some international relief workers fled in advance of Bulgaria’s decision, citing declining conditions in Serbia.  Others believed that to stay in Serbia might mean that they were forced to care for ‘enemy’–that is Axis–wounded. As British citizens, they choose to serve Britain and her allies.

On October 5, 1915, Bulgaria entered World War I on the side of the Axis Powers, and in doing so, took up arms yet again against its neighbor, Seriba. Though both the Red Cross and the Serbian Relief Fund had been treating Allied and Axes troops infected with typhus, after the invasion they were inundated with the needs of displaced civilians, fleeing battle, and wounded soldiers, sent to the hospital for advanced care.
